Chrome prices inching up but high stocks limit increases for now: Chrome/Molybdenum Highlights

European ferromolybdenum prices, basis 65%, increased to $29.00-29.30 per kg, in-warehouse Rotterdam, up from $25.20-25.70 only a few weeks ago.

With the Chinese New Year holiday period occurring during early February, we expected that global chrome markets would remain relatively stable between mid-January and mid-February and indeed they have. Prices on a wide variety of chrome products are more-or-less unchanged since our previous tracker. The market continues along its trend of stability seen since early December 2018 (see chart).

For reference, spot market prices of charge ferrochrome in China are currently at $0.81/lb chrome contained (import material, cif Shanghai, duty unpaid), up by 1¢/lb since our previous tracker. Domestic material is at RMB6,850/tonne gross weight (equivalent to around $0.83/lb chrome contained). Elsewhere, high-carbon ferrochrome is priced at $1.03/lb in Europe and at $1.12/lb in the USA.
