Prices to increase notably in March, April: European Highlights


Having fallen for 8 consecutive months, transaction prices on the most common grades of stainless steel will finally rise in Europe.

We mentioned last month the possibility that European stainless steel prices may finally reverse their downward trend with the arrival of March. With the recent update of alloy surcharges, that is most definitely the case.

Having fallen for 8 consecutive months therefore, transaction prices on the most common grades of stainless steel will finally rise in Europe. The uptick will likely extend through into Q2 as well.

Behind the reversal is the notable pickup in nickel prices seen since the turn of the year. Ending 2018 at price levels of around $10,500/tonne, nickel prices have since rallied and they currently sit at the $13,000/tonne mark. A basic calculation suggests that this has added some $200/tonne (€175/tonne) to the cost of producing grade 304...
