Mill price hikes help to establish US HDG pricing floor: American Market Highlights


While remaining decent, end-use demand for HDG was somewhat disappointing in January with some service centers calling it the worst January that they have seen in years with certain big non-automotive customers pulling in their horns.

US HDG stabilizes, but fails to rise on back of mill flat-roll price hikes
US HDG spot base prices have continued to ease slightly in recent weeks, to $780-820/short ton from $800-820/ton a month ago – a pricing level where we believe they will remain at least for the next month or two despite widespread attempts by the major mills both east and west of the Mississippi to step up prices by $40/ton. While this falls short from what the mills had hoped to achieve, it is an accomplishment for the mills to stop the price bleeding that had been occurring since July when HDG base prices peaked at $1,020/ton.

Thus far, it appears as if coating extras will also hold steady next quarter, although that is far from being certain given that zinc prices are currently at the cusp of where they would need...
