More producers target growing Mexican market: Mexico and Canada Highlights


Steel Dynamics Inc (SDI) revealed more details about their plans to build a new flat-rolled mill in the Southwestern US, announced in November last year.

With the gridlock in the US resulting in the government shutdown, hopes that Section 232 measures for neighboring countries will be softened in the near future are fading. Even more worryingly, it was reported that the renegotiated Nafta agreement could face difficulties when coming to be ratified by the Congress, raising prospects of a delay or even new negotiations. Reacting to this, President Trump threatened to withdraw from the Nafta agreement completely if the new deal is not approved. This pushes changes to the Section 232 regime further down the agenda.
