Ferrochrome contract prices to fall some 10% in Q1: Chrome/Molybdenum Highlights

Minor falls in chrome ore prices have also limited the possibilities for China’s ferrochrome smelters with regard cutting their prices further.

Oscillations up and down but on a general downward trend. That accurately describes the mood and pricing of global spot markets for chrome during 2018, with all key spot market prices for chrome ore and ferrochrome set to end the year at levels lower than when it began. 2018 is ending amid a mood of pessimism with regards 2019.

That said, most chrome prices have in fact remained relatively stable in recent weeks. The widely-watched import price for charge chrome in China remains at $0.81/lb chrome contained (cif Shanghai), as it has done since mid-November. Domestic spot prices within China meanwhile have slipped only slightly, by RMB50/tonne to RMB6,900/tonne (equivalent to some $0.81-83/lb). A minimal fall in tender offer prices for ferrochrome delivery during December from China’s major stainless steelmakers...
