Chinese rebar sales cool off but residential construction keeps prices high: International Long Product Market Analysis


Chinese mills followed a similar strategy with flat steel, as HRC production rose following a pickup in demand.

Growth in Chinese rebar supply has been trailing off throughout this year. Fastmarkets MB research calculations show that cumulative Chinese rebar output was up by 5.8% year on year in August, reaching 135.6 million tonnes, compared with 128.1 million tonnes produced over the same period of last year. Rebar output growth has weakened after a strong start to the year – cumulative production rose 17.6% year on year in the first quarter, moving down to 8.2% year on year by the end of the second quarter.
