Chinese majors seek more stability but spot prices fall to 2018 low: Asian Market Highlights


The recent decline in Chinese spot prices has made them more competitively priced when compared with our other Asian benchmarks, which remain stable.

During the past month, China’s integrated leader Baosteel has decided to target stable pricing for November shipment for the bulk of its flat-rolled and galvanized base prices; rare exceptions include adding 50 yuan for Al-Zn coatings and 150 yuan for colour coated sheet. Not unusually, however, spot price assessments have revealed a different trend during the past month. For domestic hot-dipped galvanized sheet (HDG) for example, our latest assessment for the southern and eastern hubs averages at 5,005 yuan including sales taxes, which is the lowest assessment we have recorded this year and down from 5,078 at the time of our September issue. Deducting for sales taxes and converting to dollars, we calculate a price of $619/tonne, down from $633/tonne one month ago for the 1mm thick, medium-wide sheet variety we price, which includes a...
