New deal to replace Nafta keeps Section 232 tariffs intact: Mexico and Canada Highlights


An agreement is a relief for the automotive industry, which was faced with a possibility of increased tariffs on imported cars in the US and uncertainty for the supply chain if Nafta negotiations had failed.

North American countries agreed to revise the Nafta trade agreement, with the new deal called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The deal upholds principles set earlier by the US and Mexico bilaterally, with new rules of origin for the automotive sector increasing the share of content to be produced in North America to 75%. Steel and aluminium tariffs, however, were not revised as part of the USMCA negotiations, and the US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross commented that there is no timeline for removing Section 232 tariffs for North American trade partners.
