Brazil MPI prices to slide further as export volumes rebound: South America Market Analysis


Pig iron exports from Brazil jumped in August to 157,460 tonnes, up by 47% month on month and 12% year on year.

Merchant pig iron (MPI) prices have remained weak through September as we expected. Prices fell by $15 per tonne to average at $358 per tonne fob Vitoria/Rio and by $12 per tonne to $376 per tonne fob Ponta de Madeira, according to Metal Bulletin. As a result, Brazilian material has remained at a discount to the CIS-origin products for the fourth month in a row, of $12 per tonne on average over the past month.
