Auto sector struggling: European Market Highlights


Average prices of hot-dipped galvanized coil (HDG) remain at €660/tonne in the region, unchanged since our previous tracker even as producers have looked for increases above those achieved last month.

While Europe’s producers of coated steels were able to push through price increases last month, any intentions that they had of ramping up prices even further through late 2018 appear to have stalled.

Average prices of hot-dipped galvanized coil (HDG) remain at €660/tonne in the region, unchanged since our previous tracker even as producers have looked for increases above those achieved last month. They may eventually succeed in obtaining higher prices – early September has seen ArcelorMittal finally appear to secure the go-ahead for its takeover of Ilva following successful talks with unions regarding future staffing and lay-off procedures. Eventually, Ilva should move from being a producer undercutting others in the region to being part of the wider ArcelorMittal conglomerate with greater market and thus pricing power.

Nevertheless, it will take time for greater pricing power to arrive at Ilva and in the Italian market as...
