Japan scrap market improves but hot metal costs should prevent further rise: Asia (Exc.China) Market Analysis


Rising domestic scrap consumption has reduced Japan’s reliance on exports, but external shipments remain important for Japanese scrap sellers.

After largely flat scrap price movements in May, Japanese domestic scrap prices improved in June. June’s price for HMS#2 on a delivered Tokyo basis increased by $13 per tonne month on month in June to an average of $325 per tonne delivered Tokyo. Domestic HMS#2 prices in Osaka rose by just $5 per tonne to $312 per tonne delivered, while export prices for the same material dropped by $5 per tonne month on month to $307 per tonne fob.
