Brazil MPI markets slid in may amid slow trading: South America Market Analysis


Despite reportedly good demand for MPI in the Brazilian local market, we believe that this cannot keep sellers from the export market in the long term, especially as some blast furnaces are planned to be restarted in Brazil.

Export prices went slightly down in May, although Brazilian exports showed resistance to the decline. Carajás-origin merchant pig iron (MPI) prices declined by $8 per tonne month on month to average at $400 per tonne fob Ponta de Madeira in May, while prices for material from Minas Gerais state went down by $5 per tonne to $393 per tonne fob Vitoria/Rio. Trading activity has been subdued amidst a lack of demand pull abroad reportedly strong buying activity at home.
