US HDG spot prices appear to be approaching their peak: American Market Highlights


In an effort to beat the Section 232 tariffs, US steel imports, including HDG sheet and coil imports, surged in March.

Even though domestic mills haven’t made any official price hike announcements, US HDG spot prices have continued to climb over the past month, reaching $970-1,100/short ton with most deals being concluded at about $990/ton. This is up from $900-960/ton a month ago. Much of this, however, has been due to a strong reaction to the steel Section 232 tariffs, including fears of a lack of steel availability.

But while HDG supply has been quite tight in the West Coast, fueled in part by uncertainty about the ability of the mills to get the slabs that they need, steel has been much more readily available in the Midwest, where lead times are still, on average four weeks for conversion mills, seven to eight weeks for mini-mills...
