US HDG price increases are meeting little market resistance: American Market Highlights


There has been a general tightening in the HDG sheet supply-demand balance, although it hasn’t been as extreme as what we have been seeing for HRC.

On the back of the two $40/short ton price increases announced in January – one during the beginning of the month and the second toward the end of the month – US HDG spot base prices have already moved up to $860-$900/ton, from $790-$860/ton a month ago. This, however, is only about 75-80% of the total amount being sought by the domestic mills. MBR does believe that it is very likely that the remainder will be successfully collected within the next few weeks given a mid-single digit increase in galvanized sheet shipments over the past month or so, coming at the same time as imports have been easing and with scrap prices holding at fairly high levels.

Given that zinc prices continue to rise, MBR believes that HDG coating extras, which were pushed up in January, could also rise again in the short term.
