Diverging prices lead to narrowing premium: Coking Coal and Coke Market Analysis


After seven months straight with a rising premium for first-tier hard coking coal, the gap has now narrowed.

Prices for premium hard coking coal from Australia continue to fall while prices remain stable cfr China. The retreat in the price for premium hard coking coal fob DBCT continued for a fifth consecutive week as the index dropped 3% week on week to average $214.02 per tonne in the week ending Friday 2 February. Meanwhile, prices have held up more for premium hard coking coal cfr China. The index actually recovered 0.4% last week to settle at $210.93 per tonne on average.
