US HDG prices helped up by rising raw material costs, strong demand: American Market Highlights


Already, spot base prices have moved up to $790-$860/ton, up from $780-$800/ton a month ago.

Helped along by rising scrap, iron ore and other raw material costs, strong US and global economic growth, and lower import volumes, as well the third mill price hike in as many months, US HDG prices have continued to move upwards. This comes as US Midwest mills announce a $40/short ton price increase, trumping the $30/ton hike announced by West Coast mills just a few days prior to that.

Already, spot base prices have moved up to $790-$860/ton, up from $780-$800/ton a month ago. This includes amounts that were still unpaid from previous prices increases as well as approximately $10-$15/ton from the latest price announcement. In addition, ArcelorMittal announced a minimum spot base price of $900/ton on Jan. 5, a level that seems to reflect a price that is higher than the sum of all three currently announced price hikes. This is possibly an indication of their expectations...
