OCTG market well supplied amid price correction: Americas Market Analysis


With the expectation that the Section 232 report would be released in late June, OCTG buyers stepped up orders ahead of any action on steel imports just as domestic capacity continued to ramp up.

Section 232 still on the table, but looks to be set aside for now
MBR understands that the Section 232 investigation remains active with the US Commerce Department continuing to collect information for the expected report. The report and any action on its findings, however, will likely be delayed until well into 2018 as the Administration has indicated that the priority is to pass tax reform measures before rolling out sweeping changes or trade restrictions. It is unclear whether the report will be released in the meantime and action will be delayed in it, or the report itself will also be held back. The timeline for tax reform has not been set but is expected to be a lengthy process within and between the Executive and Legislative branches.

This likely puts the timing of the actions on steel trade to mid-to-late 2018. As MBR has stated in past issues of...
