Contrasting performance of the automotive sector in Mexico and Canada: Mexico and Canada Highlights


Looking at the data breakdown, both flat and long steel imports rose m-o-m in May, by 48% and 39% respectively, but y-o-y changes are much more distinct.

Apparent steel consumption in Mexico jumped in May by 28% year-on-year to just over 2.4M tonnes (please see chart on the left). While finished steel production remained relatively stable, with only a 1% y-o-y growth over the first five months of 2017, finished steel imports were the main factor behind a sharp rise in apparent consumption. Indeed, Mexico’s imports saw a surge in May, as they rose by 46% month-on-month, or more than doubled y-o-y, to 1.12M tonnes.
