Prices revive on demand pick-up: Asian Highlights


As demand has accelerated as of late, stainless inventories held at Wuxi and Foshan are reported to be low.

Chinese demand drivers firm

While there are some concerns in the market about tighter monetary policy stifling economic growth and impacting on stainless demand, conditions are mostly surprising to the upside. Despite an infrastructure and property investment slow down, private investment is gaining, helping to mitigate the impact of credit tightening measures - the sector accelerated to 6.7% in May, from 5.3% in April, representing a pick-up of private manufacturing sectors. Moreover, for June, industrial production rose 7.6% year-on-year, with manufacturing surging by 8%. Other key industrial sectors, such as motor vehicles and electricity, saw relatively stable growth, at 6.2% and 5.2%, respectively. Essentially, the mainland economy is in the midst of rebalancing.
