General steel market prices bedevil negotiations: Global tinplate market highlights


Japanese tinplate mill operators still draw comparisons between the tinplate margin on HR coil prices in 2014, before a price rout, and the margin today.

After unexpected fluctuations in steel and raw materials prices slowed the pace of quarterly tinplate contract negotiations last year and led to a spate of renegotiations, more price changes in the general market have bedevilled price discussions this year. Negotiations seem to be continuous, in many cases running into the opening week or more of the quarter. Producers had the aim of tidying up price differences dating from the contract disarray of the first quarter, while also attempting to achieve price increases.

Japanese tinplate mill operators still draw comparisons between the tinplate margin on HR coil prices in 2014, before a price rout, and the margin today. On their arguments they feel entitled to an increase of $100/tonne. The first indications were that even tidying up price differences between customers was turning out to be difficult enough, without getting significantly higher prices at the same time.
