Apparent steel consumption in the USA and Canada declined in 2016, but Mexico posted growth: Mexico and Canada Highlights


Mexican flat-rolled product imports maintained their upward trend in the fourth quarter of 2016, with imports rising to a new all-time high.

Canadian apparent steel consumption fell for the second consecutive year in 2016, echoing consumption trends in the USA. Canadian steel consumption slipped 5.3% year-on-year in 2016, sliding to 12.1m tons versus 12.7m tons in 2015. At the same time, Canadian imports of finished steel products jumped 5.8% year-on-year in 2016 to 5.2m tonnes, indicating that imports are gaining market share within the shrinking Canadian market.
