Mills battle downside price momentum: US Flat Product Highlights


In a leading move, Nucor raised sheet list prices by $30/ton, followed by AK Steel and USS-Posco.

Although HR prices were largely unchanged on a monthly average basis between February and January this year, AMM’s weekly assessment of local FOB mill prices has demonstrated intra-monthly price volatility. Indeed, following a $10/ton increase in the domestic HR price at the end of the month, the February average has once again reached $620/ton. After retreating during February on the back of lower scrap price settlements and some pull-back from buyers on growing uncertainty to the future direction of prices, improving indicators on raw material pricing, and the desire to stem any further downward momentum in flat product prices prompted domestic steelmakers to announce price hikes in late February.
