Structural and mechanical prices remain supported by costs: Americas Market Analysis


In early January, major North American HSS producers announced price increases of $40/ton and so far at least a portion of the hike has been realized.

Industrial and structural tube prices continued to rise into the first quarter of the year as a result of rising costs and the expectation that a new administration will jumpstart infrastructure and manufacturing growth. Seamless mechanical tubing prices made one of the strongest gains over the month, rising as much as $100/ton for drawn tubing with smaller increases for non-drawn. In the third and fourth quarters, seamless prices were slow to follow welded prices as they rose quickly in response to higher coil costs. Seamless mechanical tubing imports increased in the second half of the year but total 2016 arrivals were well below 2015 totals.
