US price hikes may be following costs, but they also highlight ongoing supplier bullishness for shipments in 2017.

European coil price increases this week highlight unexpected strength, though the abatement of seasonal purchasing strength is already presenting downside risks. MBR stated through Q4 last year that the surge in seaborne coking coal prices would have a lagged impact on costs of European integrateds, and an immediate effect on prices. As a result early flat product price hikes in Q4, amid lower coking coal input costs, led to a surge in nominal metal spreads, which we predicted would falter through Q1.
