Chinese price falls causing concern for Europe’s coated steel producers: European Market Highlights
But behind this quietness and relative stability lie some worrying signs for Europe’s producers of coated steels.
Following price jumps of 40/tonne in April, and then 60/tonne in May, recent weeks have been very quiet in comparison. As of writing, average prices of hot-dipped galvanized material (HDG) in Europe are up by just 5/tonne since our previous tracker. As a result, they now stand at some 525/tonne.
But behind this quietness and relative stability lie some worrying signs for Europes producers of coated steels.
We reported on emerging signs of falling prices elsewhere and increased import competition in last months tracker, and this trend has continued over recent weeks. As the source of many global price movements and of great influence in world markets, news that Chinese prices continue to slide must be of concern. Domestically they have stumbled by some 50/tonne since mid-May, while export prices are also down sharply from around $520/tonne (fob China)...
