US HDG prices keep on rising: American Market Highlights


We believe that prices are now either at or are very close to their peak with iron ore prices already down and scrap prices expected to fall $10-$30/long ton in June.

Helped along by tight supply, lean inventories and limited imports, US prices for HDG steel sheet continued to climb both east and west of the Mississippi over the past month. The only new price increase announcements, however, were largely catch-up moves from the West Coast mills. California Steel, which has already closed its August order books, followed a leading move by USS-Posco to raise base prices for all flat-rolled sheet products, including galvanized products, by a minimum of $150/short ton in May.

While not making any further price hike announcements, the Midwest mills have also been quoting higher prices to their customers compared with a month ago with that price seemingly rising every week. They have the ability to do so given that lead times there have already stretched out to at least eight to twelve weeks for those mills that still have spot availability and they are largely...
