Brazil emerges as bulk ferro-alloys importer in 2015
Brazil’s ferro-alloys trade position shifted dramatically in 2015, with the traditional net ferro-alloy exporting country shifting to a net importing position for several key alloy products. The trade balance change is unsurprising given the well-publicised issues with Brazilian energy shortages and rising power costs over the past year.

The trade balance change is unsurprising given the well-publicised issues with Brazilian energy shortages and rising power costs over the past year. As power shortages became increasingly prevalent and led to sharply higher power costs, numerous domestic alloy producers slashed ferro-alloy output, as highlighted below. In many cases, alloy producers opted to sell electricity back to the grid rather than use it themselves for alloy production.
