Producers struggle amid prolonged market weakness


Persistent and prolonged weakness in alloy and ore markets has prompted more producers to adjust business plans over the past week. Following on from last week’s analysis, highlighting cutbacks at South Africa’s UMK and Slovakia’s OFZ, South32 has now announced its manganese ore production plan for its South African operations.

Following on from last week’s analysis, highlighting cutbacks at South Africa’s UMK and Slovakia’s OFZ, South32 has now announced its manganese ore production plan for its South African operations. South32 suspended mining at its Hotazel mines in South Africa last November as it undertook a review of its South African manganese assets. Manganese ore over-supply and strong competition in the manganese ore export market, in large part due to the development of new mines in South Africa’s Kalahari basin over the past five years, has led to dramatically lower manganese ore prices over the past year.
