HDG prices started to rise even before second price hike round was put on the table: American Market Highlights


With the second $30/ton price hike round led by Nucor Jan. 12 and already being followed by a number of other mills east and west of the Rockies, including ArcelorMittal USA, AK Steel, NLMK USA and California Steel Industries, MBR believes that the customers that hadn’t been paying the entire $40/ton hike will soon do so.

Shortly after US sheet mills announced that they were increasing base prices by $40/short ton early in December, HDG prices, which aren’t weighed down by the same exposure to the energy markets as is the case for HRC, began to inch up. By early January, average HDG spot base prices had already risen by about $25/short ton, with some customers paying the entire $40/ton hike, bringing spot prices to $515-$530/short ton.
