Pricing dynamics dictated by location and grade: Coking Coal and Coke Market Analysis


While Metal Bulletin’s premium and hard coking coal indices (FOB Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and CFR Jingtang) stand markedly lower on a year-on-year basis, key developments in China and markets ex-China have had a material impact on the dynamics between benchmarks over the past few weeks.

Chinese coke producers have continued to suffer a similar fate witnessed by their peers in the steel industry, as weakening domestic consumption, oversupply and multi-year low prices have led to heavy financial losses. Moreover, the Chinese coke market typically experiences seasonal strength in tandem with the restocking activity during the winter months, before adverse weather conditions impact on mining operations and transit routes.
