Market weakness spurs additional output cuts: Ferro-alloy Market Analysis


The US silicon metal industry has seen prices trend lower in recent months, in line with most other alloy markets, but underlying demand remains strong.

Unsurprisingly, the extended price weakness in most ferro-alloy markets has prompted further production cuts over the past week. In South Africa, International Ferro Metals (IFM) has shut all of its ferro-chrome furnaces and chrome mining operations after entering into business rescue proceedings. We understand IFM is also seeking to sell its operations and is in discussions with an interested party. IFM produced 210,000t of ferro-chrome in 2014, and in late April, the company’s full-year production guidance for 2015 was about 200,000t....
