HDG price slide continues: American Market Highlights


Mostly, HDG is selling at a base price of about $620/short ton, although some mills are negotiating their offering price.

Underlying demand for hot-dipped galvanized sheet (HDG) remains quite good, with automotive production continuing to chug along thanks, in part, to low gasoline prices that are keeping demand robust. Also, solar panel demand and an improvement in both residential and non-residential construction is pushing up sales of HVAC, appliances and even galvanized studs. Nevertheless, prices have continued to plummet.

Mostly, HDG is selling at a base price of about $620/short ton, although some mills are negotiating their offering price. This does not only include discounting for higher volume buys, but also some rejigging related to coating weights on the back of weak zinc prices, which have fallen by around 7.5% since the beginning of the year. As a result, we have heard of several occasions of HDG base prices of $580-$600/ton. This is down from a base price of $660-$700/ton a month ago, illustrating the sharp price falls. ...
