Suppliers suspected of holding back material: Coking Coal and Coke Market Analysis


In the run up to the quarterly coking coal price negotiations in Q1 2015 between Japanese steel mills and Australian coking coal miners, the market has been generally stable as some sellers are suspected of “holding back” supply amid persistently low prices.

China’s appetite for coking coal and coke has been healthy, though new environmental policies that will come into force at the start of 2015 appear set to slow consumption of specific grades. Data released by the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed that member mills (~80% of total Chinese steel capacity) increased output by 4.34% to 1.71M tonnes per day (tpd), in the final ten days of November relative to the previous ten day period.
