Summer stability continues, price falls halted: European Market Highlights
Given what appears to be rising demand and supply cutbacks, are prices in Spain and wider Europe now destined to rise?
As with July, August is a traditionally quiet month in the European steel markets. Nevertheless, a degree of change is noticeable this month in the form of pricing movements, with prices on the whole remaining stable. Base prices for hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) remain at around 490/tonne in southern Europe and 540/tonne in northern Europe, as per our assessments last month. That stability is being described as change is perhaps a bit confusing but certainly welcome for Europes coated steels producers who have been suffering price falls for each of the past four months. As explained last month, a degree of optimism is warranted in the European coated steels markets prices elsewhere in the world have risen and are now at a substantial premium to European material and capacity shutdowns and production cutbacks have also begun to restrict supply.
