Low production levels, however, suggest the market is typically tighter for the time of year.
Although the first quarter is typically associated with price rises and early replenishing of consumers inventories, the mood in Europe, since business started from January 7th, has been less buoyant than usual. Prices have been rising overall, partially because of the seasonal restocking that inevitably takes place - though it is more muted than usual - although overall gains typically reflect the end of cut-price, pre Christmas deals rather than an upward shift, particularly in north European countries such as Germany.
