US HDG mills look to stop sheet prices from sliding: American Market Highlights


Mills pursue base-price target of up to $770/short ton in the near term.

Just when it appeared that HDG and other flat-rolled steel prices were starting to give back some of the gains they had achieved from the three rounds of price hikes announced late last year, AK Steel came up to the plate and announced that it was raising prices of all carbon flat-rolled steel products, including HDG by $40/short ton. While several other major US producers, including ArcelorMittal USA and US Steel, are following this leading move, MBR is doubtful that this clearly defensive move will stick in any significant way. We believe it will establish a pricing floor at a $690-$730/short ton base price (or $790/t average for 1mm G90 coating) with some discounting possible on large volume orders. This compares with the desired $730-$770/ton should the entire price increase be accepted.
