US smelters coming into the headlights: Electricity analysis
Ormets Hannibal smelter closure remains on the cards, whereas Century’s Ravenswood continuing in its attempts to secure an attractive power contract to enable it to restart
Although US smelters have managed to avert the pressure to shutter operations over 2012, buoyed up by strong Midwest premiums, firm demand and a tight physical market, this trend is now faltering. As we discussed in the July report we noted Ormets intention to close one potline at its 270,000 tpy Hannibal smelter in Ohio, the process for which has already commenced. However, they are now talking of the possibility of closing the whole plant by year end.
