Tubular mills east and west of the Rockies look to raise prices: Americas Market Analysis


Among the mills that have announced $50/ton price increases are AK Tube, TMK Ipsco, ExlTube, Maruichi American, Vest, Hannibal Industries, Evraz Inc. North America, Independence Tube, Bull Moose Tube, Welded Tube of Canada, Leavitt Tube and Nova Tube.

If it is true that there is strength in numbers, then domestic welded pipe and tube mills, much like their flat-rolled steel suppliers, should find comfort in the sheer number of companies that have fallen into line – both east and west of the Rockies – announcing December or January price increases. When the first announcements were made to increase prices of not just DOM and mechanical tubing, but also hollow structural sections and standard pipe by $30-$50/ton, despite their exposure to the building and construction industry, which is yet to see any noticeable recovery and is not likely to see any for the next year or so, there was some resistance. But MBR now believes that they will at least partially stick. We do not, however, think they will be accepted in their entirety.
