The long drawn out Eurozone crisis has aggravated the effect of seasonal weakness, oversupply and falling substrate prices for tinplate mills in Europe.

The long drawn out Eurozone crisis has aggravated the effect of seasonal weakness, oversupply and falling substrate prices for tinplate mills in Europe. Short-term thoughts are concentrated on first quarter contract negotiations and longer term thoughts on the management of decline, survival in a mature market with too much capacity.

Strike losses at Florange – essentially a response to ArcelorMittal’s plans to cut capacity - had scarcely any impact on supply, which only added to the group’s determination to run down the high cost unit.
