The long drawn out Eurozone crisis has aggravated the effect of seasonal weakness, oversupply and falling substrate prices for tinplate mills in Europe. Short-term thoughts are concentrated on first quarter contract negotiations and longer term thoughts on the management of decline, survival in a mature market with too much capacity.
Strike losses at Florange essentially a response to ArcelorMittals plans to cut capacity - had scarcely any impact on supply, which only added to the groups determination to run down the high cost unit.
