Europe remains over-supplied: Global tinplate market highlights
Import deals remain few and far between even as offer prices dip.
High inventories continue to plague the European market. A strike at Liege in Belgium shut its tin mill line for 7-10 days in early October as the workers went on strike as ArcelorMittal announced the permanent closure of the blast furnace there. However, the line only produces 10-12,000 tpm so the disruption was small and the line is now back in operation. We understand that Florange continues to operate at below utilisation rates as the shift reductions have been extended. The decision on whether to bring back output at Aviles has yet to be taken, but even if it does come back, output is likely to remain at lower levels. There may also be additional output cuts at Trostre over the remainder of the quarter.
