EU market quiet: Europe, Middle East and Africa Market Analysis
EU mills are planning to increase prices in September, but this is largely dependent on gains in coil prices.
Unsurprisingly, the EU market has been flat over August, with reduced levels of activity and no major price changes. Highlighting the reduced activity are Italian exports volumes in August 2010 were less than 50% of other months, and we expect a similar trend in 2011. Prices in southern Europe remained in the range of 640-680/tonne ex-works for ERW S235 and Greek prices were up slightly to the bottom end of that range, as the truly aggressive discounts seen in the last couple of months were withdrawn. Northern European prices remain at around 670-700/tonne ex-works for similar product. Underlying the unchanged prices was little change in HR coil, which is selling for 510-530/tonne ex-works in southern Europe and around 530-550/tonne in northern and central Europe.
