Chinese coking coal prices to solidify: Coke and Coking Coal Highlights


There has been little movement in Chinese coking coal markets this month, with spot prices consolidating at the higher levels.

There has been little movement in Chinese coking coal markets this month, with spot prices consolidating at the high levels seen over this quarter so far. Domestic prices on average moved up $5/tonne in Shanxi to $245/tonne EXW, only showing small fluctuations throughout the month of around $2/tonne around that level. This was very much in line with our expectation for prices according to our monitoring of the tight fundamentals. We are expecting these small fluctuations in price trends to continue through the rest of this quarter, as import supplies remain tight.

As we noted last week, the supply side tightness has been exacerbated by the disruption from government projects to enforce mine consolidation for domestic coking coal producers. Even imported supplies that would have been available...
