Mills look to stop HDG price slide: American Market Highlights


US mills are seeking to prevent HDG and other flat-rolled prices from falling any further than the $100/ton or more level.

In a flurry of price increase announcements, US mills are seeking to prevent HDG and other flat-rolled prices from falling any further than the $100/ton or more level. This charge to raise flat-rolled steel prices was led by Severstal North America, who announced a $40/ton hike in HDG, hot rolled and cold rolled prices in mid-May. This was followed by AK Steel, who announced a $60/ton rise in HDG prices as well as a $50/ton increase for hot and cold rolled coils; NLMK Indiana, Duferco Farrell and Sharon Coating all announced a $40/ton price increase; and Nucor, also raised its price by $40/ton.

These moves took the domestic coated steel market by surprise, especially given that it has already been stung by a fall in demand, which is likely to be because of an early summer quiet...
