Regional Asian prices on the increase: Global tinplate market highlights


Tinplate mills have been able to pass through the increase in costs in the second quarter.

As forecast, the combination of higher raw material prices (and HR coil prices) and strong seasonal demand has pushed up regional tinplate prices again this month. Taiwanese producer Ton Yi is now at $1,400/tonne FOB as is Dongbu Steel in South Korea – both up $100/tonne over the month, while Japanese mills have led the way at around $1,400-1,500/tonne FOB. This has enabled regional mills to return to their comfort zone for the spread of tinplate transaction prices over HR coil. It brings back the Japanese spread for example to around $700/tonne. After being eroded in the first quarter as coil prices rose, while tinmill products lagged, they are now back to profitable levels....
