MBR has been told that about a quarter, 30.5m tpy, of Japans total crude steel capacity was affected by the disasters. Of the 30.5m tonnes of capacity affected, about 29m tonnes represents sheet-producing operations. Sumitomos Kashima steel works with 9m tpy of crude steel capacity, suffered serious damages and operations are suspended indefinitely. Nippon Steels Kimitsu and JFE Steels East Japan Steel Works reported minor damage, if any, but are not operating due to power restrictions.
