Mills pass on rising costs: American Market Highlights


Mills have been able to push for higher prices again this month on the back of increasing raw material prices.

Mills have continued to push for higher prices again this month with rising raw material costs despite little tangible improvement in the overall strength of demand. Severstal NA has increased its hot-dip galvanised sheet to $880/tonne. The company also set galvalume sheet prices at $890/tonne and electro-galvanized sheet at $960/tonne - extras to be applied. AK Steel is introducing a $44/tonne increase on its flat product prices which will see HDG prices reach $900/tonne for G-90 1mm material.

The primary justification for the increases remains underlying cost pressure as raw material costs continue to rise. Domestic obsolete scrap prices have jumped approximately $60/tonne since the fourth quarter of 2009 and unlike in many regions outside the USA have continued to...
