Chinese taxes on Bauxite exports are meaningless


The US and the EU have recently launched a case at the WTO against Chinese export taxes on several industrial raw materials. MBR cannot see economic rationale for Bauxite export taxes being on that list.

The United States has recently announced that it and the European Union bringing a challenge to China’s export taxes on several industrial raw materials to the World Trade Organization. These materials are Bauxite, Coke (from Coking Coal), Silicon, Magnesium, Manganese and Zinc. The US claims that the export taxes are giving Chinese industry an unfair advantage, costing American jobs and going against WTO rules. Predictably, Chinese government officials dispute these claims, proposing that the export taxes are in place to protect the environment....
