Although a recent flurry of supply disruptions have hit the headlines recently, possibly helping to buoy sentiment and attract speculative buyers, in our view they have not changed the supply-demand outlook.

Analysis of recent nickel production developments

There have been a number of new production disruptions and other supply-side developments in the nickel industry recently. We review these below and discuss their implications on our supply-demand estimates.

Xstrata has indefinitely suspended operations at its 9,000 tpy Montcalm mine in Ontario after discovering structural damage. We have already made significant allowances for lost refined nickel production in Canada due to many mine closures in the Sudbury basin this year, and we do not feel the need to change our assumptions following the Montcalm situation.
