Mills opt for yet another large monthly increase: American Market Highlights


US coil producers plan to raise prices by as much as $150/ton ($165/tonne) for May and June deliveries.

US coil producers plan to raise prices by as much as $150/ton ($165/tonne) for May and June deliveries. If the market accepts this increase in full, June deliveries of HR and CR coil can be expected to surpass $1,000/ton ($1,102/tonne) and $1,100/ton ($1,213/tonne) respectively. HDG base prices are marginally higher still at around $1,120/ton ($1,234/tonne).

Recent scrap price rises have been one of the principle justifications for the mills’ increases. Domestic prices for HMS No. 1 and No. 2 scrap have broken $500/l.ton, up from around $330-350/l.ton four weeks ago. The substantial rise in coking coal benchmark prices in Asia will also have a knock-on effect on coal markets worldwide and therefore add to some US mills’ production costs.
